Acting Premier Jacinta Allan today revealed that four level crossings will be fully removed by the end of summer, well ahead of their expected schedules for removal.
The level crossings are all located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The level crossings at Heatherdale Road in Heatherdale, Blackburn Road in Blackburn and Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road in Bayswater will all be removed.
During October, Bayswater Station will be completely demolished, paving the way for a new, revitalised station to be built in its place that is expected to open during the middle of December.
As a result of these works, trains on the Belgrave line will run express through the station, and replacement buses will be sorted for those affected.
The works come as part of a construction ‘blitz’, with the Belgrave line between Ringwood and Belgrave currently preparing for a 37 day shut down. During that time 63,000 cubic metres of rock will be excavated which will allow the rail line to be lowered, and road bridges to be built over the top of the lines.
Due to these works, Scoresby Road will be closed where the level crossing was located for a period of 17 days, from the 2nd to 19th of November.
Removing the four level crossings was a promise made by Andrews Labor Government.
Acting Premier and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allen spoke of her delight that the removals were ahead of project.
“Our level crossing removals are fully funded and we’re not wasting a moment getting it done.”
“Four more crossings will be gone by the end of summer, reducing congestion, improving public transport and saving lives.”
