An upgraded Station Road interchange on the Calder Freeway will offer a much safer and smoother experience for more than 16,000 vehicles daily after works on the project were completed.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the $6.65 million project involved building new roundabouts at existing freeway on and off ramps for Bendigo and Melbourne-bound traffic, plus a wider four-lane section of Station Road.
“The Station Road intersections upgrade will significantly improve traffic flow at the key Gisborne intersections where traffic exiting the freeway via off ramps previously had to give way at Station Road.
“Completion of this important work will support the considerable demand that has been placed on this key interchange during the past decade from an increase in freight, residential and through traffic,” Mr Chester said.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the new interchange would help resolve frustrating congestion issues.
“These intersections provide an important north-south link between New Gisborne and Gisborne, as well as a key transport link between centres such as Bendigo and Ballarat,” Mr Donnellan said.
Senator for Victoria James Paterson officially opened the upgraded intersections today, and said simplified interchange configuration would enable a much smoother journey for the thousands of vehicles that travel Station Road every day.
“Local people will find it easier and safer to get to where they need to be and freight operators will also save valuable time thanks to these important upgrade works,” Senator Paterson said.
“Additional works included new street lighting and bicycle and pedestrian paths to maximise safety for all road users, and landscaping to enhance the entrances to New Gisborne and Gisborne. While recent heavy rainfall has hampered finishing touches and a site clean-up, the upgraded interchange is now fully operational.”
Victorian Member for Macedon Mary-Ann Thomas thanked the community, who have waited patiently for the upgrade and provided considerable input into the final design of the intersection.
“Feedback from the local community has helped to ensure all road users can safely use the intersection with minimal impact on the local environment,” Ms Thomas said.
