State Government to provide $350 million in extra funding to complete M80 Ring Road upgrades

Posted On December 14, 2016

The Andrews Labor Government will provide $350 million in extra funding to finish the upgrades of the M80 Ring Road.

As part of the works, the M80 will be widened to four lanes in each direction from the Princes Freeway to the Western Highway to help ease congestion woes on Melbourne’s roads.

Similarly widening works will be undertaken between Plenty Road and Greensborough Highway to extend the lanes to three.

The interchange where the M80 Ring Road meets the Princes Freeway and Greensborough Highway will also receive a major upgrade that will help the roads cope with the increased traffic flow from the aforementioned lane widenings.

Several safety upgrades will also be undertaken, such as the creation of a new lane from the M80 Ring Road to Edgars Road to address an increasingly common ‘weaving’ technique used by motorists to exit at the Craigieburn Bypass.

As well as the new lane, new speed limit signage and ramp signals will be installed along the Ring Road as part of the upgrade to the freeway’s road management system.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said that the works will help ensure a safer and quicker drive for motorists.

We’re putting people first by finishing the M80 Ring Road and creating a safer and smoother drive – whether you’re from Wyndham or Whittlesea, heading to the airport or to regional Victoria.

“We’re upgrading the M80 to complete this vital missing link and give people a faster and safer drive.”

The upgrades will provide a boost to the Victorian economy, with the estimated 22,000 trucks that use the soon to be upgraded roads now able to reach their destinations more efficiently after departing the Port of Melbourne.

This upgrade will also see the full integration of the Western Distributor, which will create more routes for commuters travelling to and from the West.

Early works on the $1 billion upgrade are expected to begin mid-2017.
