Construction works on several of Melbourne’s major road upgrades will increase in scale over the holiday period in order to fast track works currently underway.
The State Government has urged all motorists to plan their trips in advance to minimise the impact of the extensive works being undertaken across the network.
More works will be undertaken thanks to quieter nature of the holiday period on Melbourne’s Roads to help prevent significant disruptions.
The upgrades across the network aim to eliminate some of Melbourne’s most congested choke points in preparation for our City’s growing population and road demands.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan encouraged motorists to plan ahead in order to minimise the impact of the inevitable delays.
“We know these works mean delays, but they are crucial to unlocking some of the most significant choke points on our roads.
“While every effort is being made to minimise the impact on motorists, we encourage drivers to consider alternate routes or modes of transport, plan their journey and to allow extra time.
“We’re building better roads for Victorian families to get them home safer and sooner to their loved ones,” said the Minister.
Major works will be undertaken on the West Gate Freeway and Tullamarine Freeway as part of the CityLink Tulla Widening Project, as workers tear down English Street Bridge and lift beams into place for the new bridge.
The Tullamarine Freeway will be closed in both directions between the Calder Freeway and the M80 Ring Road from 10pm on Thursday 5 January through to 10am on Sunday 8 January and motorists should expect delays if travelling to and from the Tullamarine Airport.
Upgrades to Shepherd Bridge in Footscray and maintenance work on the West Gate Bridge will also be taking place.
VicRoads will be constantly monitoring traffic flow and the impact of detour routes on existing and neighbouring road and will adjust traffic signals accordingly to improve the flow of traffic and minimise congestion.
Road signage will also be installed that will provide drivers with live traffic times and potential alternate routes.
