65 High Capacity Metro Trains to be built locally

Posted On November 23, 2016

Construction of 65 High Capacity Metro Trains will be done locally, in a massive boost for the Victorian economy.

The $2 billion order, which will see 65 new trains built, is the single largest order in Victorian history. The consortium led by Downer Rail has officially been awarded the contract for the construction of the trains.

The new trains will provide much needed relief for commuters on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line, thanks to the trains being 20% larger than the trains currently operating on Victoria’s busiest rail line.

Other trains will begin in service as a dedicated fleet between Pakenham and Sunbury, eventually travelling through the upcoming Metro Tunnel.

Each of the 65 new trains will be built locally, which will provide up to 1,100 jobs as part of the process. It is expected that 60% of the materials needed will be sourced locally, with the other 40% coming from overseas.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan spoke of the State Government’s investment in the project.

“We’re investing in new trains built in Victoria, for Victoria – putting local jobs and local train users first.”

“Together with the removal of every level crossing between Dandenong and the city, these new trains will reduce crowding and make the daily commute more comfortable for thousands of passengers.”

Previous plans for the trains under the old Liberal Government would have seen the trains built in South Korea, rather than Australia.

Apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets will undertake 15% of the work, a valuable opportunity for those beginning their careers.

Through partnerships with Toyota, Chisholm Institute and Swinburne University, the HCMT project will also create opportunities for workers transitioning from the automotive industry.

The first High Capacity Metro Train will be delivered and in testing by November 2018, ready to enter service in 2019. All 65 trains will be ready for the opening of the Metro Tunnel in 2016.
