The Victorian and Australian government have approved a new traffic interchange to replace the Sand Road intersection.
Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said works on the interchange would also facilitate in the existing construction of a local bridge.
“Motorists using Sand Road are currently required to give way to oncoming traffic before crossing both the freeway's east-bound and west-bound carriageways,” Truss said.
“This can increase travel times and lead to motorists becoming frustrated and performing unsafe driving manoeuvres.”
The development aims to give motorists safer and more efficient access to nearby townships and service centres.
Victorian Minister for Roads, Road Safety and Ports, Luke Donnellan, said work on the project has progressed well since it first started in October 2014.
“Next week's traffic switch is a major step forward that will allow the project to be completed in late 2017,” Donnellan said.
Federal Member for McMillan, Russell Broadbent, said road users should be extra cautious with the new plans and to lower their speeds during road works.
Road users will be kept informed of traffic management changes via road signage and on the VicRoads website.
