Works on strengthening Wantirna Road bridge over Dandenong Creek is complete.
Federal Member for Deakin, Michael Sukkar, said the $1.1 million Wantirna Road Bridge project had strengthened its carrying capacity from 25 tonnes to 44 tonnes.
“The Bridges Renewal Programme extends the lifespan of vital pieces of infrastructure, such as this bridge south of Ringwood, and will minimise maintenance work required in the years ahead,” Sukkar said.
“Works involved constructing a new bridge deck, along with a new footpath, pedestrian fencing, bridge barriers and guard fencing.”
Works on the bridge began in October last year, which in addition to strengthening, improved pedestrian and cycling access.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, said the Australian government provided $533,000 towards the project.
“The Australian government is investing $300 million over four years in the Bridges Renewal Programme to support the repair and replacement of bridges nationwide,” Chester said.
The bridge was funded under round one of the Australian government's Bridges Renewal Programme.
More than 10,000 vehicles travel across the bridge each day.
