In recognition of Victoria’s booming population, the Victorian Government has acknowledged the need to invest in transport infrastructure across the state. In the Victorian Budget 2016/17 the Victorian Government introduced a funding package worth more than $8 billion towards the development of transport infrastructure, including the construction of new and improved rail lines in metropolitan and regional areas.
The funding will include a significant $2.9 billion commitment towards the construction of two nine kilometre underground tunnels between South Kensington and South Yarra, as part of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project, one of Australia’s largest ever public transport infrastructure projects. The project aims to unlock Melbourne’s metropolitan train system by constructing the state’s first underground metro service, allowing for an additional 20,000 passengers to utilise rail services during peak hour times.
In facilitation of the discussion of these critical projects and on-going developments within Victoria’s transport industry, the 8th Annual Victorian Transport Infrastructure Conference is being held at the Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre on the 15th & 16th of June, for delegates to share ideas and knowledge surrounding Victoria’s growing transport infrastructure network. Evan Tattersall, Chief Executive Officer, Melbourne Metro Rail Authority, will be presenting on the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project.
The conference is expected to attract more than 200 delegates and feature over 20 key speakers from a wide range of projects and industries, including topics on Transport Infrastructure Priorities for Victoria, Safe Road Infrastructure – An upgrade on progress and an Overview of Victoria’s Road Projects, with Hon. Luke Donnellan MP, Minister for Roads, Road Safety and Ports, State Member for Narre Warren North, as well as Hon. Jacinta Allan MP, Minister for Transport, Minister for Major Projects – VIC scheduled to present at the conference.
The $5.5 billion Western Distributor Project is another major transport infrastructure project to be discussed at the conference. Expected to create 5,600 new jobs, the project is expected to remove thousands of trucks from local streets and deliver a $11 billion boost to Victoria's economy. Andrew Williams, Project Director - Western Distributor Project, Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, will be presenting on the Western Distributor Project.
The conference will also include a Panel Discussion on the topic of Future of Transportation: Looking Ahead, with key speakers Dr. Reece Clothier, President, Australian Association for Unmanned Systems, Deputy Director, Sir Lawrence Wackett Aerospace Research Centre, RMIT University, Genevieve Liston, Head of Partnerships, GoCatch, Matthew Denman, General Manager, Uber – Victoria, Stephanie Asher, Board Member, Committee for Geelong and Stuart Ballingall, Program Director - Cooperative and Automated Systems, Austroads.
Other improvements as part of the $8 billion commitment towards transport infrastructure will include $587.7 million to extend the South Morang line to Mernda as part of the Mernda Rail Project, and more than $140 million to duplicate a section of single track on the Hurstbridge line between Heidelberg and Rosanna.
The two day conference offers highly valuable networking opportunities for project managers, operators, contractors, consultants and investors, to learn about the state’s growing pipeline of transport infrastructure projects taking place within Victoria.
The 8th Annual Victorian Transport Infrastructure Projects Conference is being held on the 15th & 16th of June at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
