$25 million fund to upgrade regional roads

Posted On September 21, 2016

Minister for Roads and Acting Minister for Agriculture Luke Donnellan has paid visit to Moolort in Central Victoria in a bid to encourage rural, regional, and outer-suburban councils to apply for their share of $25 million to upgrade roads.

The $25 million in funds will help upgrade local roads, intersections and bridges come courtesy of the Labor Governments ‘Local Roads to Market Program’. The program aims to upgrade the roads that are utilised by Victorian farmers, food transporters and agribusinesses. The upgrades have been made possible thanks to the State Government securing the $9.7 billion lease to Port Melbourne.

The’ Local Roads to Market Program’ is a key part of the Labor Government’s $200 million Agriculture Infrastructure and Jobs Fund (AIJF), that aims to ensure that Victoria’s agriculture business is as strong as anywhere else in Australia.

Mr Donnellan spoke of the planned works and the positive impacts it will have for people such as farmers and those who transport food.

“Our priority is ensuring that farmers can get produce from paddock to port safely and more efficiently.”

“The lease of the Port of Melbourne means dedicated funding will go to regional and rural Victoria, helping create jobs and increasing investment in vital infrastructure.”

“Stronger bridges, larger turning circles, sealed roads, and wider roundabouts are the practical projects we can undertake to improve agribusiness and improve country roads for all users.”

Currently, tight intersections, unpaved, gravel roads and low load bridges are a productivity nuisance to transport trucks and the routes they are required to take.

The current road network problems are major frustrations for food and fibre producers who want to get their product to market as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

The Local Roads to Market Program fund will support better connections to arterial roads and better links to national highway freight networks.

The Government has been in regular discussions with Victorian Farmer’s Federation on the roll out of the fund and has encouraged all local councils to apply.
