Consortium’s shortlisted to deliver $1 billion Metro Tunnel signalling system

Posted On September 16, 2016

The Victorian Government has today revealed that two bidders have been earmarked to deliver the Metro Tunnel’s 1 billion signalling and communications system.

The two consortiums are:

  • CPB Contractors  and Bombardier Transportation
  • A ‘MetroConnect’ consortium that consists of John Holland, Siemens and UGL

When selected, the preferred bidder will be responsible for the installation of the high capacity signalling that will be used for the new Sunbury to Pakenham line that will eventually be a part of the Metro Tunnel.

The installation of high capacity signalling will be an Australian first.  HCS allows trains to operate faster and closer together, allowing for more trains on any one network at a given time, shortening travel and wait times for commuters. It is reported that up to 30 trains may be able to run in a single hour.

A new Centre of Excellence will be constructed to support the growing industry of rail and communications signalling.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allen spoke of the current rail overhaul that has seen projects completed and trains ordered across Australia.

“The world’s best have been shortlisted to deliver the biggest and most advanced signaling package in Victoria’s history. The successful bidder will install next generation signaling, which will allow safer, more frequent and reliable services in and out of the city in peak hour.”

“The Centre for Excellence will provide skills, jobs and opportunities to local workers in the growing rail signaling industry.”

“The Andrews Labor Government is delivering the Metro Tunnel, removing dangerous and congested level crossings and building bigger, better trains to get people home safer and sooner every day.”

The contract is expected to be awarded sometime in 2017.
