65 new trains to be built in Victoria

Posted On September 12, 2016

1100 jobs are set to be created in Victoria thanks to the Andrews Labor Government ordering 65 trains to be built in Victoria, the largest single order in the state’s history.

Premier Daniel Andrews, Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan and Minister for Industry and Employment Wade Noonan have today revealed that the Evolution Rail Consortium have been nominated as the Government’s preferred partner for the project.

Evolution Rail have been chosen after worldwide global search that spanned a year, beating out three other consortiums who all had industry leaders from international and local manufacturers involved with their bids.

Premier Daniel Andrews spoke of the benefits of the project, stating “This brings enormous benefits to our state, creating 1,100 local jobs and cementing Victoria’s reputation as the nation’s hub for high-skilled manufacturing and a global hub for train building.”

In positive news for the local industry, every train will be built locally in Victoria. It is expected that 60% of the construction materials needed to build the trains will also be sources locally. Previously the Government had indicated that only 50% of the content would be sourced locally.

A plan has been created to ensure apprentices and workers from disadvantaged background will account for at least 15% of the project’s workforce.

Downer’s Newport manufacturing facility will receive a $16 million overhaul in order to manufacture the trains.  Similarly, a new maintenance and stabling depot is set to be constructed in Pakenham’s East that will provide a further 100 jobs for Pakenham locals.

The new high capacity trains are designed to measure longer than Victorian’s current trains, and will provide 20% extra room in order to reduce overcrowding problems. All trains will be constructed using modern technology that is set to make them safer and more accessible than existing trains.

It is expected that the first high capacity train will be tested late 2018, with the 65 trains set to be rolled out fully by the time the Metro Tunnel opens in 2026.
