Construction to begin early 2017 on Hurstbridge rail line improvements

Posted On September 9, 2016

Plans to duplicate the Hurstbridge line have been boosted after the Andrews Labor Government revealed that an alliance of bidders have been selected for the construction works.

The construction works will include the construction of Rossana Station, as well as the removal of dangerous and busy level crossings in the area.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan spoke of the reasons why the level crossing’s are being removed.

“The level crossings at Rosanna and Alphington are among the worst in Melbourne, clogging up roads in the north eastern suburbs – that’s why we’re getting rid of them.”

The minister also stressed the importance of selecting preferred bidders so early for the project.

“We’re not wasting a day – moving ahead with a preferred bidder paves the way for construction to commence next year, so we can give people better train services and safer roads sooner.”

The ‘alliance’ of Laing O’Rourke, Fulton Hogan and Jacobs have been selected as the preferred bidder for the line duplication.

The construction of a second track line from Rosanna to Heidelberg is set to provide commuters with more and less crowded services, a necessary step to improve the reliability of the Hurstbridge railway line.

Works on all part of the project will be done concurrently, reducing any potential disruption to locals in the affected areas.

Any local residents or businesses that are interested in potential concept designs and further information about the Lower Plenty Road level crossing removal and Hurstbridge line duplication can do so at drop in sessions at the Rosanna Cub Scouts Hall on:

  •    Thursday 22 September 6pm-8pm
  •    Saturday 24 September 10am-12 midday

It is expected that construction of the Hurstbridge line projects will begin early 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2019.
