Chandler Highway Upgrade works to commence shortly

Posted On October 3, 2016

The $110 million Chandler Highway Upgrade is close to beginning after four construction companies were shortlisted for works to remove two significant bottlenecks.

BMD, CPB Contractors, Laing O’Rourke and Seymour Whyte are the shortlisted companies, and will submit tenders for the project in the coming weeks with the successful contractor expected to be announced by the close of 2016.

It is expected that up to 44,000 motorists will see major improvements from the upgrade which is set to extend the width of the highway to six lanes, as well as construction of a new bridge over the Yarra River.

Other works include the upgrade of the The intersection at Heidelberg Rd as well as an improvement in safety with traffic lights being installed at Yarra Boulevard.

The 125-year-old Chandler Highway Bridge will be transformed into a shared commuter path for cyclists and pedestrians.

Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan spoke of the benefits the project will have regarding travel times on the Chandler Highway.

“Motorists will be able to spend more time at home with their families with a travel time saving of 8 minutes during the AM peak and 13 minutes during the PM peak.”

“We’re fixing the bottlenecks along the Chandler Highway which was recently nominated the third worst spot for traffic congestion in Victoria, in RACV’s annual Redspot survey.”

It is expected that construction will begin in early 2017 with an estimate completion date of June 2018.
