Bendigo rail works progressing nicely

Posted On October 7, 2016

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan has attended the Taradale construction site, where crews are currently working on restoring the 158-year-old rail bridge that used by V/Line and freight trains to and from Melbourne.

Currently 50 staff and contractors are working tirelessly to replace the existing track with a new, 160-tonne steel deck.

The Taradale bridge works are coming at a cost of $3.5 million, provided as part of the State Government’s $46 million-worth of maintenance and improvement works that are currently, or set to be underway on the Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines.

Construction will run until the end of October, with works planned to install new sleepers, tonnes of ballast, upgrading level crossings along the 380-kilometre section of track.

Other miscellaneous works include replacing rail tracks between Bendigo to Swan Hill, general signalling improvements as well as removing mud holes and revamping water drainage.

The works have been made possible by the Andrews Labor Government’s $1.3 billion investment in regional public transport.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan spoke of the projects currently being undertaken and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to regional transport.

“It’s wonderful to see the huge amount of work being carried out here at Taradale, where construction crews are working round the clock replacing sleepers and ballast, and installing a new steel deck .”

“The work here at Taradale is part of $46 million-worth of work that will be carried out along the Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines in October.”

“I know the works are disruptive for passengers but they need to be done to keep services safe and reliable.”

“We’re investing more than a billion dollars in better regional services so people spend less time on platforms, and more time at home with family and friends.”

Due to these works, buses will run in place of trains for the entire journey on the Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines. Train services are set to resume on October 31st. Bus replacement timetables are available online at www.vline.com.au.
